Limits from the Ghana Police Traffitech-GH FAQ on L.I. 2519. They apply whether or not a sign is posted. Stopping distances are typical for a car on a dry road (thinking plus braking). Trucks and buses: 60 on highways, 80 on motorways unverified; the L.I. 2519 vehicle table isn't published online yet.
Why 30 near schools
At 30 km/h a car stops in about 11 m. At 50 it needs about 24 m, more than double. A child stepping out 14 m ahead is safe at 30, and not at 40.
Read the roadside
The warning comes before the danger: a red triangle sign, then people or animals at the edge of the road. An amber tag marks anyone who might step out. Ease off early. If you are already braking when they move, you lose no time reacting.
In the rain
Wet roads at least double your braking distance. At 50 km/h a car needs about 24 m to stop when dry and about 39 m when wet. The limit is the most you may do in good conditions, not a target.
What gets you a notice
- Speeding, caught by a fixed camera, a mobile unit or a laser gun. Cameras don't have to be signposted.
- Red light: if your tyres cross the stop line after it turns red. Amber is not a red-light offence.
- Driving without your seatbelt.
- Wrongful overtaking, such as crossing a solid line.
- Each offence is its own notice, even at the same junction.

When a real notice arrives
- It comes by SMS to the registered owner, whoever was driving. Pay or contest within 14 days, then 1% more every day.
- Unpaid fines block DVLA renewals, transfers and roadworthy checks.
- Real notices come from sender GPS-MTTD and never contain links. Pay only at ghana.gov.gh or *222# option 6. Check any car with *220#.
